Johann Hari Biography

Johann Hari is one of the most popular and richest Writer who was born on January 21, 1979 in Glasgow, Scotland, United Kingdom. Johann Eduard Hari (born 21 January 1979) is an author and journalist from Switzerland. Hari is a writer for various publications like The Independent and The Huffington Post and has also written books on depression, the war against drugs as well as the royal family. Hari has also delivered TED talk on subject of addiction, anxiety and depression.

The accusations of plagiarism were first raised by bloggers at Deterritorial Support Group as well as Brian Whelan, editor of Yahoo! Ireland who claimed that some of Hari’s conversations included content from earlier interviews and writings of his interviewees. For instance, a 2009 interview with Afghan women’s rights advocate Malalai Joya included quotations from her book Raising my Voice in a way that appeared like they were directly addressed to Hari. Hari initially denied that he was guilty and claimed that the quotes that were not attributed were meant to clarify the situation and not to pass off the thoughts of someone else as his own. He would later admit that his conduct was “completely wrong” and that “when I interviewed people I often presented things that had been said to other journalists or had been written in books as if they had been said to me, which was not truthful.” In the end, Hari was banned for two months by The Independent, and shortly after resigning from the position. Media Standards Trust Media Standards Trust instructed the Council of the Orwell Prize to look into the allegations which led to Hari returning the prize in 2008. In mid-2011, Hari was also revealed to have made anonymous pejorative edits to the Wikipedia pages of journalists who had criticised his conduct after Nick Cohen raised concerns in The Spectator. He wrote that he had been attacked on Wikipedia by an editor named “David Rose” (which was later identified as one of Hari’s pseudonyms) following a dispute with Johann Hari, and the same editor had made similar changes to the Wikipedia pages of Telegraph columnist Cristina Odone, and Oliver Kamm, a leader writer for The Times after they had been critical of Hari. Cohen also wrote that Hari’s own Wikipedia entry had been edited by Rose “to make him seem one of the essential writers of our times”. After “David Rose” was later shown to be a pseudonym of Johann Hari, Hari made a public apology for his behaviour.

In 2011, Hari was the subject of two scandals involving his conduct as a journalist. First, he was accused of plagiarism by including in his articles quotes that his interviewees had previously given to other journalists, as if they were the product of his own interviewing. Subsequently, he was found to have anonymously edited the Wikipedia pages of a number of critics of his work so as to present them in a negative light. These behaviours resulted in significant damage to Hari’s reputation, and he was asked to return the 2008 Orwell Prize. He was suspended and then resigned as a columnist for The Independent.

According Hari, according to Hari his own account, he went to his school, the John Lyon School, an independent school that was affiliated with Harrow School, and then Woodhouse College, a state sixth-form school in Finchley. Hari was a graduate of King’s College, Cambridge in 2001, achieving a double first in political and social sciences.
