Omar Bongo was the President of Gabon from 1967 until his death in 2009. He was one of the longest-serving heads of state in the world, having been in office for 42 years. Bongo was born in Lewai, French Equatorial Africa, to a family of the Bateke people. He was educated at the Lycée Leclerc in Brazzaville, Congo, and at the Lycée Carnot in Paris, France. He joined the French army in 1959 and served in the Algerian War. In 1967, Bongo was appointed as the Prime Minister of Gabon by President Leon M'ba. He was elected President in 1968 and re-elected in 1973, 1979, 1986, 1993, 1998, and 2005. During his tenure, Bongo was credited with modernizing Gabon's infrastructure and improving the country's economy. He also established diplomatic relations with many countries, including the United States. Bongo was a controversial figure, and his rule was criticized for its authoritarianism and corruption. He was accused of using his office to enrich himself and his family. He was also accused of rigging elections and suppressing political opposition. Bongo died in 2009 at the age of 73. He was succeeded by his son, Ali Bongo Ondimba, who was elected President in 2009.

Born on December 30, 1935, the youngest of 12 children, Bongo served as a lieutenant in the French Air Force, then climbed quickly through the civil service, eventually becoming vice president of Gabon.
