Krishnamoorthi was born in 1973 into a Tamil-speaking family from New Delhi, India. When he was just three months old, his family moved to Buffalo (New York) so that his father could go to graduate school. Although some economic hardships forced them to live in public housing and use food assistance at times, they eventually moved to Peoria in Illinois in 1980. His father was a Bradley University professor and the family enjoyed a middle-class childhood. Krishnamoorthi was educated in Peoria public schools and graduated as valedictorian from Richwoods High School.
Krishnamoorthi ran in 2010 for the Democratic Party nomination as Illinois Comptroller. He lost the primary election by less than 1 percent to David E. Miller. He ran for the Democratic nomination in 2012 for the U.S. House of Representatives seat, which he lost to Tammy Duckworth.
